It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Queen Creek Mayor and League Executive Committee Member Mayor Barney.
Mayor Barney was nearly a life-long resident of Queen Creek who grew up on his family farm and continued to farm for many years. He joined the Queen Creek Planning and Zoning Commission in 1998, where he served until he was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Town Council in 2002. He served as a Council Member until 2010 when he was elected Mayor.
Serving 20 years on the council, Mayor Barney was instrumental in many of Queen Creek’s milestones. From opening major roadways to starting a fire department and providing municipal water services, he assisted the council with strategic decisions that helped propel the community forward. Under his leadership as Mayor, the Town continued to make strategic advancements becoming the first municipality with a fully-funded pension system and recently the launch of the Queen Creek Police Department.
Mayor Barney represented Queen Creek in a variety of state and regional positions, including the Maricopa Association of Governments Regional Council and Transportation Policy Committee, the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority Board of Directors, the Maricopa/Pinal Gateway Alliance, the Arizona Municipal Tax Code Commission, and the League of Arizona Cities and Towns Executive Committee. He was selected to join the League Executive Committee in 2017, where he served until his passing.
Mayor Barney will leave a legacy in the Queen Creek community and throughout the State of Arizona.
